I had read this

Giant MealWorms
are Tenebrio molitor that have been treated with a chemical/hormone that is used primarily for pest control of flies. This pesticide are only detrimental to invertebrates and since the pet shops only sell them as feeders they couldn't care less. The treatment prevents the larva from maturing into beetles and also increase the number of times that it molts and therefore they grow larger. The worm will die if they attempt to mutate and the ones that do manage to survive and turn into beetles are sterile.

Now, obviously I'm not sure exactly how that works, but, I dont want any part of anything considered pest control in my 8 legged babies food ;p
