So I was browsing the internet as I often do at night, looking at information on the avic sp.
I came across this video showing an avic swimming. I had no idea they could swim!
Has anyone else here heard of this or actually seen them swim? I thought they would drown if they got to wet.
heres the video

All spiders can swim...but for how long would differ from species to species. A avic could swim for some time but a stirmi might be able for only a couple minutes. I use to find Ts in the pool all the time when I was a kid.

I've seen a video of a gbb sling swimming and climbing out of a very large bowl . It was posted to prove a point about someone who refuses to use a waterdish (each to their own) for slings and was giving abuse to a new hobbyist for asking the question.

See when i first decided that my facination for Ts outweighed my fear of them I started to research and soooo maaany people said they can drown if they get wet and to put marbles, aquarium stones, or natural sponge in their water dish so they dont drown. I soon found out that you can keep just a plain water dish without anything in it to provent drowning but I still thought they could drown in a large enough thing of water. Im learning new things about Ts daily and i love it. Every night im in bed reading about them, watching videos, reading on the toxicology of different T venoms. I think I've caught the sickness.
I still can't believe I used to be scared of these guys. They are so interesting and i actually find them rather cute, especially poecis. I love the way they walk. My avic has quite a cool strut also.

I had a swimming spider once in my collection. I had a big tank with "paddling pool" for it and would put prey in the water. never saw it swim once....LOL.
Point being that with the hairs (especially on avics) it helps spread the surface tension and trap air almost creating a bubble so in desperate times, nearly all spiders can "swim". Drowning occurs as the book lungs can absorb too much humidity hence why the so called "care sheets" that insist on really high humidity are complete garbage! IMHO. :)

It makes sense now that i think about it. The hairs would create the water tension needed to stay on top of the water. I also makes s3nse that your T didnt willingly swim. I assume they only swim if they have to. Like if the forest floor gets flooded during the rainy season and they fall from their tree. I would assume they wouldnt purposely go swimming But its cool that they can. When i think of tarantulas i dont think of them swimming.

My name is Justin and im an arachnoholic. The first step is admitting you have a problem.
What if i like being and arachnoholic though? I guess its not a problem?
You ever look into scorps? I had a H spinifer juvie that liked to crawl into his water dish and crawl on the rocks in it, completely submerged. For much longer than a human could hold their breath. I thought he was suicidal, but he never drowned. (Scorpions cant swim at all). He'd just sit in there, underwater, looking at me as I looked at him. Funny stuff :) Its possible he was hiding, looking back now..I experimented quite a bit with different species of scorp communals. Mass murder happened a few times. :(

thats strange behavior for sure. I had a bark scorp as a kid. When i was 13 i ssaw an empire scorp in a small pet shop and asked the guy to hold it for me because id come back the next day and buy it and the enclosure. Sadly i came back the next day and he sold it on me. I definitely like scorpions and am not as nervous around them as i am spiders but at this point i have so many Ts on my wishlist that im not sure when or if I'll get a scorp. I want to collect every avicularia sp. That i can get ahold of legally. I have also been seriously thinking about getting a poeci but i know im probably not ready for one because of my lack of experience. But man do i really really want one like yesterday not today, not tomorrow but yesterday.

Ive noticed. Ive been seriously thinking about getting a Poecilotheria striata. I know everyone loves the p. metallica but i think the p. striata is even more beautiful. I love the way poecis walk. If it wasnt for my lack of experience i would have already bought one. Im so tempted to get one anyways but i know the responsible thing to do is wait until i can saftly handle a T like that.

If you want a Poeci, get one. You're an intelligent adult human, it will be no match for you ;) Your fascination already outweighs your nervousness. Just watch vids and read about safe husbandry with the faster, hotter tarantulas. There's really only one rule: remain calm. Fear is the mindkiller. Now, go forth and conquer! And don't get bitten. I hear it hurts like a mother****er. Hehe.

agree with @MassExodus , get one. Only gain experience by doing so as long as you respect EVERY spider, you will be fine.

Hmm. I cant resist. The reason i am reluctant is because of the venom. I was bitten in the face by a widow when i was younger and it was a pretty painful experience. I know how i am supposed to act with a spider like that but my nervousness makes me questio getting one. Maybe ill get an enclosure for one and then get the spider. By the time i get the enclosure i will probably have my mind made up.
