New Cobalt Blue from Petco

So I went into my local Petco the other day for crickets and giant roaches, only to see that they had a Cobalt Blue and it was discounted by 50%. I asked one of the managers why the discount was in place, to which she responded that it was accidentally sent there, was super mean, and everyone was scared to feed and give water to it. It apparently was also there for quite a few months with nobody even curious.

She offered it to me at 75% off and I couldn't say no. She wasn't lying about the firey attitude, so I have no idea why they sell a species known to be a bit more hot and defensive. Most pet stores have rosies and pink-toes, so this was strange to me.

Apparently they have a mean boa too, but I was just curious as to people's thoughts on this.

It is the Cobalt Blue #2 from my album. It was absolutely gorgeous, and they said they aren't supposed to get them at this store. I made off pretty well, but as with my first T from Petco, they wouldn't have given me much info about it unless I asked. The people at my local Petco are usually pretty good, but I think they all avoided this spider like it was the devil and only the manager had any good info about it. If a regular person decided to make the jump on this I would fear for them a bit.

Please post a photo. I can't believe petco would sell such a fast, defensive OW tarantula to the general public.

You would think that they wouldn't but I've seen quite a few posts on other forums lately where people have got them from petco,we can only hope that they don't end up selling one to any under age kids as that would be a disaster for the hobby if they ended up getting bitten...

I'm not sure if it will go that far this quick, but without the proper education I feel like they shouldn't be selling it. Kind of an issue of running a corporate franchised pet store I guess, all animals are for profit product that need to be moved as quickly as possible.

They learn about and take care of all the fish and reptiles, so it shouldn't be too hard to educate the entire staff about this one new creature that need specific caution.

Wow, what a find and what a deal. Good for you, rescuing that poor, neglected creature - shame on Petco once again.

Petco, like many big box stores, isn't about information, they are about moving product. I really try not to shop at stores like this because of the harm they do and misinformation they distribute - I'd rather pay a few $ more to support a smaller, mom and pop, or educated breeder when sourcing livestock - regardless of species.

spideynoob, I was only there to buy crickets and large roaches, but the spider was discounted because it was there for over six months. I got an even better discount when they noticed I was interested.

Even if it is an immature male, at least I got it before someone with no knowledge of them did and got injured or injured it. And as far as I'm concerned, a $20 for a beautiful blue is worth it ;)

Too bad the males aren't blue when they mature.

I was at an expo a month ago and a dealer (to be unnamed) had a Parabuthus transvaalicus scorpion. You know.... The one that can sling venom about a metre. And not knowing me tried to sell this first over everything else.

long story short buyer beware & buyer be informed.

So maybe an issue with this T? It is keeping one leg straight up in the air at all times. I tried touching that leg with my paintbrush, to see if there was any intense reaction or pain or anything, but it didn't move. Of course when I closed the lid and it clicked the spider went into threat pose.

Anyone seen anything like below:

That's odd !!! Has it always done this or is it a new thing ??? (May of had a fall)
I wouldn't worry to much they can lose & regain limbs at when ever they want !!!
Just keep an eye out for moulting as it could cause a problem !!!

Hey @Down with OBT, It is only putting this particular leg straight up in the air. I'm using a cocofiber/jungle mix mixture at 50/50, with some terrarium moss in only the one corner. It immediately dug and funneled right into the moss after the first misting, so I assume it doesn't have anything to do with the substrate.

And @spidey noob, I've left it sit, other than occasionally checking on it or moving it with the paintbrush to supply some water, so I have no idea.
