My local pet shop has an unsexed juvie Mexican Red-Knee for sale at $90. The T looks good and has only been there a couple days. Any questions I should ask? Any red flags I should know about? Thanx for the help.

What? No pics???

Approximately what size is it?
Sorry, didn't have my phone with me. Just a guess, maybe about the size of a half dollar, but I can't be 100 percent sure. When I said juvie, I guess I meant small.

If it's fairly small and unsexed, 90 dollars seems steep, I paid $150 for my 4" female. I would try asking to bring the price down to I'm guessing 60. You are referring to a B. hamorii right? Red knee could be anyone of several species, scientific names are advised.

Not sure which species but I can try and dig a little deeper on it.

A B. Hamorri that size would go for around $50-60 from a private breeder online (shipping not included), $75 from a tarantula shop online (shipping not included) $90-$100 from a pet store sounds about right.

Remember you're not paying for shipping like buying online so factor that in.
That's worth at least 40 simoleons, maybe 45. I have factored that in but I guess my main concern is which species it is. I need to check with them and get a little more 4-1-1 on the critter.

I get it about the scientific names, but they don't know the species cuz I asked. They just knew the common name. And this is not a mom & pop shop so I don't imagine the price is negotiable. Think I'm gonna pass on this one.

Yeah 99.9% of pet stores don't know or even care to know the scientific names, you'll be able to find better deals here, on online dealers, or the other online forums, but never buy tarantulas from dealers that specialize in reptiles, that is like ordering a hamburger at a restaurant that specializes in chinese cuisine.

The pet store manager gave me their vendor info. The manager also said their vendor purchase order showed no other info except it was a Mexican Red-Knee. I called the vendor asking general questions about what info was supplied to the stores they sell to, e.g., sex, species, age, CB or WC, etc. The manager could only tell me that they were captive bred but had no other info about the spider and kept referring me back to the store manager.

I told him more than once that the store manager was provided no other info other than the common name and that's why I was calling him. I felt like I was on a merry-go-round going back to the same question. He seemed a little put out that I was even asking these questions in the first place so I wished him a good day b4 hanging up the phone. On a side note, this does not sound like a place I would want to do biz with.

My experience over 35 years buying cichlids is that the best 'finds' were from little pet shops that had no idea about cichlids except they were nasty fish that kill everything, that's where I always found the rarities and illegal contaminants. Knowledgeable shopkeepers knew that the fish were not the species they ordered or that the guy selling little brown fish was selling a hard to find species, the Mum and Dad owners just want their five bucks!
I always used to check them out, that's where you can pick up a rare species for the price of a common one if YOU know what you're looking at! :)
