Is this going to be a decent enclosure for an inch sized H. Pulchirpes sling? I'm think substrate at half mass for burrowing situations if the subject decides to do so. I'd like to have it set up before I get my bitey bitey.

I'm also thinking two or three rows of 1/16 inch ventilation holes at 3/4 inch space above the substrate level. I'm also thinking at least 9 holes near the opening of the enclosure to assist with watering from a pipette as I do live in a dry area, and I understand that H. Pulchirpes is a heavy webber. I hear webbing assists in the dissipation of water. I'm thinking half coconut fiber and ground sphagnum moss to assist with borrowing, and either two or three pieces of either dried bark or artificial vines for anchor point, and a coke bottle cap as a water dish. Should I start the borrow myself? Let the H P do the borrow itself or just leave a small hide?

Also, am I crazy for picking H. Pulchirpes as my first T, or should I grab the obt sling they're selling there for $20 too, and just say goodbye to my social life?

Dont worry about decorating or hides...they will bury them.

They even bury their water dishes.I just roll up some wet moss and toss it in. As they bury it weekly I just keep getting the moss area wet. At least if they get thirsty they can suck moss...;)

Social life??? One or two Ts aren't going to take up any of your time to care for. Once a week feeding as sling...you'll have plenty of time. ;)

Provide anchor points and you don't necessarily need to create a burrow yourself but a small starter burrow or somewhere dark and hidden for your sling to run to when you house it will make it feel safer and less stressed. Where I live isn't particularly dry and I have no experience with this species so I'll let someone else give their opinions on ventilation

As for a first t it doesn't matter what you get. As long as you do adequate research and your responsible when you need to rehouse or work with the t/enclosure then you'll have no issues.

Good example of this is Australians in the hobby. Due to import laws they can only obtain native species so all their tarantulas are old world. There are also members on this forum that started with "advanced" species.

I have seen where people soak have soaked talcum powder in water and painted the upper edge of containers with it in order to prevent a T's escape. It appeared to work. If talcum is innert to tarantula biology then I may try that, but planned on just using a giant shallow plastic Tupperware container with minimal surface pitting. I'll probably just pack the current enclosure inside the new one and let the little thing decide when it wants to move. Assuming we can cooperate together.

They generally run to the bottom when you disturb the enclosure. At that time I peel back the lid and dump in the the prey item. As soon as they get the prey item you can take off the lid and do your maintenance. I've never had one try to escape with its mouth full...knock on wood.:)

Perfect sized container for your new T and it should also work well for the other tarantula you intend to acquire. As for your social life, mine didn't stop at caring for over 1000 at a time so you should be good with a few hundred ;) ......but why stop there? :D

I fully intend to breed endangered sp. That's the ultimate goal. The joke about losing my social life was more about the fact that I will probubly be more interested in my T's than trying to make friends with people.
