Thanks all for your advice re my Aphonopelma anax, I was just moving vivs around..again..and I decided this was the time to check and see if the anax which I got in January was alive, I admit my motives were that I have someone else who could live in the Viv if it was, I was extremely careful and moved one part of the hides it has and there it was! So “itt’sss aallliiveee” which I am delighted at but quick question...
It’s rump was very pale and hairless..it hasn’t been flicking because it disappeared when hairy the day I got it and has had no disturbance, so is that o.k, it looked pale and mangy, is that normal? Hopefully it will molt when ready and I won’t be going near it to check again.

It could well be approaching a moult. Some Ts will kick hairs as defence against predators while they're vulnerable.

They also use those hairs to put them in the web when they close the retreat. That keeps sniffing rodents noses away :T:

Thank you Enn, yes, I’m sure it must be due as it hasn’t all the time I’ve had it, just hope it picks up and turns around, my chalcodes is such a beautiful animal, hoping the anax will be healthy too. It was a nice surprise to find it!
This was it on the day of buying, so it looked like a nice T.

Really?? that’s amazing, I had no idea! Every time I learn something like that it brings even more immense respect for these creatures, bizarrely the very creatures I used to be absolutely terrified of two years ago.
It must of done that then because it looked like a plucked chicken:D
Thank you for that. Fascinating.:)

if it's as bald as a 'plucked chicken' then if in premoult the skin underneath will look dark grey ish in colour as that is the new hairs forming underneath. if a light brown/beige, then its likely not in premoult (yet) and has flicked for some reason.

Hi Phil, thanks for that, very interesting, it was definitely pale brown beige, what is curious is that it has been buried away since it disappeared in January, and its house and surrounding area has been quiet and undisturbed whilst it was securely hidden in a dark enclosed walled up hide so I am surprised it felt it needed to flick. It’s so curious but it was WC so maybe extra alarmed at vibrations.
Thank you so much for the advice and what to look for.

Nk problem at all. The fact it is WC is probably the reason for hair loss and indeed no real appetite as in the wild, they will probably be used to not feeding for prolonged periods of time. Just keep fresh water available :)

Thanks Phil, I won’t buy WC again, the chalcodes is great but this one has just not the oomph CB have, my mistake but I hope it will turn around. I guess it had gone through a lot of stress and might take a while to recover.
Thanks again.

I think you might be right! but I’ll let you know if I resisted after the next show coming up!!:D
The chalcodes settled so quickly and she is an absolute stunner, I’ve never seen such beauty. I know we need wc to produce cb of course. Fingers crossed anyway, thank you for your advice. :T:

which show was it? I was at the Invictus in January and the BTS last weekend so far this year. Invictus was one hell of a journey (over 6 hours drive) but met some really nice people. Same with BTS. managed to meet up with a member on this forum which was good. :)

Damn! That would of been fun!
Yes it was at Ashford! First time I ever went, really brilliant, took a big picnic bag and filled it up to the top with tarantulas! Yay! Ashford is just two hours from here but got stuck in a traffic jam so journey did take 6 hours in total! Yikes! Worth it though!
I so wanted BTS but from here it would be 4-5 hours I think. Maybe one day!
We’ll all have to try and meet up next year!
There’s two more down here though, shoreham, Sussex and a smaller one at Petersfield, Hampshire. Will be going...will be spending!!!!:)

Did you really see me?....ha ha
Yeah my ex wife used to limit me to 6. The emphasis is on the word ex, that's what inspired me for that signature. I have over 600 now and breeding is now only spider related....LOL
