I am not sure if this is the proper thread please tell me if it is not.
I bought weird looking Dubias some time ago, arounf half a year and now they became Blaberus (?).
Anyone knows how to check sex of them and why they are all different colors? I am also surprised they hiss. :p

First one the blackest is fresh moult after 2 days.
Second photo is brown old wat I assumed was male and under him a fresh today moulted one.
And then it hissing. Also the brown one was vibrating and ramming into the black one when it decided to rest after moult. I assumed they are both males and that was some territorial behaviour. But could it be courting the female?

I don't think you have Dubia there but it's hard to tell. Not a giant hisser. I have used Dubia feeders for years. Never had a Dubia hiss at me. My giant hissers don't have wings. I'm sure someone on the forum is familiar with that particular roach species.

Yeah I am pretty sure it is not dubia, they are way too big. And hiss. I thought maybe Blaberus family? But still I bought them dirt cheap and wanted just some adults for my dubia colony. When I got home I was suspicious they are massive nymphs. Like twice as big. So I put them in that box and observed. But now I need to know what it is, will it breed, How to see female from male? Are they even the same species or just some random giant roaches together?

Spent a minute looking at roach species and those things look familiar but it's been more than a min. Can't remember the site but the guy sold nothing but roaches and had a ton of different species. Find a roach site if you haven't already! Funny when keeping a horde of Tarantulas you end up looking at more roach species than you would have ever imagined...lol,lol!

I tried to look but all I found is Blaberus Giganteus but they are slightly off even if they are pretty massive. I am not a big roach person and I do not really know much about the variations betweew certain species and families. I did find some but all of them are very vague and sometimes give out opposite information than the other site I find. That's why I came here to be sure and ask what are they and how do they breed.

They cerrtainly look to be one of the Blaberus family to me. Looking on Google, maybe discoidalis, the false deadhead?

Oh yes that one looks exactly the same but what about the black one? Man I dunno what is considered a different variant and what is a normal discoloration or shape of marks on the roach. The fresh one from today looks like the brown one but less brown wings more pronounced symbol behind the head.

They look huge to me. On par with the giant hissers but not as heavily bodied! From the pics they look cool!! And hiss as well! I looked up Blaberus Giganteus and think you are spot on!! Should make a killer feeder for a big T at that size!!! An interesting note is they stridulate! This may be the hissing you are hearing! Madagascar hissers produce the hiss through their spherical(sp) breathing holes. Look to see if you see them rubbing body parts together when the hissing occurs. This may help greatly narrow down their identity but believe you are correct with Blaberus Giganteus!!!! Happy Spoodering with them killer feeders!!

Oh no I keep them as pets unless they decide to breed. But all of them look so much different from each other and there is so little information of them and sexing them. :O

Lol, kinda like my hissers. I would have a killer colony of these guys by now but I totally underestimated the escaping abilities of nymphs. Totally slip through any little crack and climb probably better than a T. Sound almost like you might have got a few different species if there are that many variations of them. The pics of those guys they look awesome though! Hope you get things sorted out with them as well. This has got me thinking bout roach shopping.lol!

I remember this movie from back in the day!!!
I also repeatedly watched this thing as a kid. My mom wouldn't let me go see it in a theater (wow was parenting different back then) but I was glued to the set every time it came on late-night TV. Total classic of schlock cinema.

I think Bug and Starship Troopers have single-handedly kept the pest control industry alive.
