Escaped B annitha sling **found!**

OK. So my tiny (maybe 3rd instar) B annitha sling has somehow managed to squeeze through an air hole in its tub and is now on the run somewhere in my house. I don't know how it managed to fit through the hole. It moulted a few weeks ago in that tub too, so its bigger now than when I got it 3 months ago!

I've obviously had a very good look for it, but I've come to the conclusion that it's going to be nearly impossible to find: it's an absolutely tiny sling and there are so many places for it to hide.

My question is will it survive in my house? I have two small children and whilst I'm not concerned at the moment, my fear is that in a year or two it will suddenly appear in their lego box!

So sorry to hear this! Definitely good to take a 2nd or 3rd look through the substrate too, though you've likely done so.

My experience is that they do not tend to go far. I've heard of people spreading baking soda at night hoping to find tracks the next AM. Of course this only works if it escaped in an area with tile floors.

Best of luck!

agreed, the one escapee i had was found on the same shelf unit the enclosures were on hours later. They'll run to the nearest place to hide and sit there till disturbed usually.

I've scoured the shelving unit many times but no luck. It's not looking good. And yeah I checked through the substrate carefully too.

I had this happen twice. Found it both times Once on a wall 2nd on The shelf beneath. Things to keep in mind is how long has it been missing. Or b smithi I new was within the last 2 hours. We're the lites on or off. Tarantulas don't like a lot of lite. It was pretty bright when the sling crawled out of our enclosure which is why it stayed in the shelf it lives in. That's how I found our b smithi the 2nd time it escaped when it wasn't hiding in plane view. I would look under books and other objects that would provide a dark area in the immediate vicinity of its enclosure. Be careful not to accidentally crush it.

The 1st time it was pitch black when it escaped, found it in another room on the wall.

It's been 2.5 days now so I'm not holding out much hope.

Can a Tarantula survive in a house long-term?
At that size, likely not. Babies dry out really quickly. Some species are more resilient than others. I would keep looking, though. Maybe put a water dish down near where it escaped and hope it goes for a drink.

I found it !

Unbelievable. Just when I had given up all hope of ever finding it too. I'd even emptied its deli cup and taken it off the shelf.

I was just about to go to bed last night at around 11pm and thought 'hmm, what's that dark spot on the carpet, probably just some dirt or fluff, but I'll check anyway'. So I turned the top light on, and lo-and-behold it's my little b annitha sling.

It's been nearly 4 days now and this sling is only 0.5" dls, so I'm impressed it's survived with my crazy kids and all the bigger house spiders.

I quickly got a deli cup, put some substrate in and a small piece of cork bark and put it in.

I was really gutted about this escapee so I'm happy to say the least.

They probably got a glimpse of one of those house spiders and decided that deli cup living wasn't that bad after all.
Glad that you found them!
