I am probably gonna order my first Theraphosa Blondi or Stirmi, whichever I get, and I was wondering if my Tank I already have is large enough. It is a 10 gallon tank that is 12 inches high. I was thinking of putting 4-5 inches of Coco fiber mixed with plantation soil. I’m not getting the Jumbo Goliath. I am ordering a medium to large specimen so I’m not entirely sure how big she’ll be...any advice?

If the place you are ordering from says “med-large” instead of an actually legspan in inches or cm I’d find somewhere else to buy from.

That being said, I’d think a 10 gallon would be fine for a juvie T stirmi.

Side note, beware if you attempt to purchase a blondi. The vast majority of specimind labeled as blondi are actually stirmi. Don’t get caught paying blondi prices for a stirmi.

I don't know how much weight this carries, maybe someone else can chime in here. I have read that wild caught have a lot of issues so you may want to look for a captive bred.

The site I was looking at was Backwater Reptiles and there are two options for size. med-large or Jumbo and it doesn’t say exactly which Theraphosa spider you would receive. I would guess it would be a Stirmi and I’m fine with that. This is the cheapest place to order from by far and I suppose that could be bad as well. I would personally like one of these Theraphosa species to be around a 5-6 inch leg span when I receive and let it grow large through a number of years.

Be careful with Backwater, they give you an option to choose the sex but don't guarrantee the sex. If you get a larger T and it ends up male then they may be on the back side of life since they don't live as long.

I am new to the hobby and have no personal experience with Backwater but I wanted to share what I learned when researching where to buy. The first site I came across was Backwater but it didn't take long as I continued to research to find a bunch of negative feedback among the hobbyists about doing business with them and some warned against it. I didn't find any vendor that didn't have at least one or two bad reviews somewhere but Backwater's poor reputation seemed to be wide spread when doing my research. I would encourage you to do your own research of course and make your own decision. Just sharing my experience limited as it is to add to your data....

Take a look at backwater’s reviews on the forums. They are mostly thumbs way down on backwater. Since blondi and apophysis go for severL times what stirmi costs you for sure be guaranteed to get a stirmi. I understand wanting to save money, but as always you get what you pay for. When it comes to live animals it is worth it to spend a bit more knowing you’re getting a healthy specimen that will arrive alive.

Jamie's tarantula and fear not tarantulas offer them, usually slings. The nice thing about a captive bred spidering is that even if it's male you'll have it a long time without much risk of disease and you can watch it grow.

A mail-order vendor with problems is the worst of both worlds. Heck, if an online vendor has a bad reputation, you might even be better off going to a local pet store. At least you can see the tarantula.

Casey K. might also have something.

Another good vendor people like is palp friction.

I have 9” female Stirmi, she has molted two times without any problems! I have her in a 5 gallon tank, she eats about 20 cricket for a meal! I just keep her water dish full and keep her cage wet at one end with some moss! She like the water and lay in her bowl for hours!

If they are actually soaking in the water dish, they might need a but more humidity. I've found that frog moss kept moist is very popular with all my new world terrestrials. A tarantula sprawled out on frog moss makes for some great pics to, nice background for digital cameras on cell phones or otherwise.
