Do tarantulas make noise?

Hi all,

A few minutes ago, I heard what sounded like either my Grammostola rosea climbing or scurrying around her enclosure. This got me wondering, do tarantulas naturally make any kind of audible sound? I feel like I’ve heard my tarantulas eating or making some sort of sound at times. Let me know if you’ve experienced the same thing or if you have any theories.

you can often hear them climbing. Or flipping waterdishes around but in terms of natural noise some species do stridulate. It’s like a hissing noise when they rub their chelicerae together.

Yes they can make a hissing noise, correctly called stridulation. This sound is made by rubbing their legs together. Australia has the Selenocosmia cressapies, the barking, or whistling spider & the Theraphosa blondi, Goliath Birdeater can also do it & I think there a couple of others too.

My large blondi can make a noise that can be heard from a few feet away. But my cressapies are both slings.
