When I got my colony I was told to use water crystals, that their primary water source is from their food
This is correct if you supply fresh food/vegetables for them to eat. If like me you are using roach dry mix, the water crystals are a necessity as it becomes their main water supply.

How does the dry mix work, is it worth a try Mine love carrots

I buy the crystals & just add water to it. But it is also possible to buy Bug Gel & often from your local pet shop.

They do!
I also feed dry roach feed and put different veggies/fruit ( like carrots, greens, cabbage, apple) — put them into a food processor, then offer— they inhale it :).
You are a lot more committed with your roach care than I am :)
You roaches are lucky!
